BARBARA NICKERSON MARY POWELL
BARBARA NICKERSON

BARBARA NICKERSON's enchanting watercolor paintings in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Shakespeare's The Tempest grew out of a long fascination with Shakespeare's plays. It's, therefore, not surprising that she brings her own sense of warmth to the illustrations in these books. She has shown her work in New York, Germany, and has had a solo exhibition in Paris. She is listed in both the Encyclopedia of Sumi-E and Who's Who in International Sumi-E Artists. She received her BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a workshop teacher and signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Women Painters of Washington and Puget Sound Sumi Artists. Ms. Nickerson lives on a ranch in Cle Elum, Washington, with her husband, Jul.

Out of the cave came Caliban, heavy shouldered, bow-legged, with mean slab mouth.

The shapes, though monstrous, laid a table on the grass before the King's party, and on it placed such wondrous food and drink that none there has seen better.

Slanting sunbeams lit Miranda with golden light.

MARY POWELL

MARY POWELL is an oil painter who draws her subject matter from the beautiful area where she makes her home. She describes herself as "a colorist looking to simplify". Her paintings in Poetry for a Midsummer's Night evoke feeling and mood, rather than simply illustrate, the magic and romance of a summer night sky.

Ms. Powell earned her BFA at the University of California-Berkeley. She also studied at the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, and the University of Guanajuato, Mexico, Art Institute. She has done illustrations for the Ministry of Education in Ethiopia, Africa, where she taught art and English. A painting instructor and former gallery owner, Ms. Powell has shown extensively in the United States and abroad. She is a member of Women Painters of Washington, and is registered in the National Gallery of Women Painters in Washington D.C.

Ms. Powell lives with her husband on the Chewuch River near Winthrop, Washington, at the base of the North Cascade mountains.
